Bears, Trout, Walleyes and Turkeys

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

We talk about bears in Ohio, how to fool stocked rainbow trout, how to catch ice-out walleyes and how to hunt turkeys with bow and shotgun on upcoming shows. April is a time of year when lots of outdoor options are on the table -- and I'll do my best to keep you covered with the latest tips and info from guest experts who hunt and fish here in the Buckeye State. Thanks for tuning in and Happy Spring! -- Dan

At Cabela's This Weekend

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

I'll be leading my Kids Fishing 411 program at 1 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16, at the Columbus Cabela's store. After those two seminar times I'll be heading down to the Ohio Deer & Turkey Expo, which comes to town Friday through Sunday, to catch some of turkey hunting seminars. Producer Glenn Helgeland is my guest this week on the show, and will be sharing some info on the programs he's offering at the expo this year. See you there -- or at Cabela's!

Big Walleyes and Blue Catfish

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

I joined Capt Mike Patterson on the ice at Lake Erie last weekend, fishing six miles off Crane Creek in 22 feet, and saw some huge walleye caught -- as well as netting a few nice fish on my own between photos shoots of anglers with enormous walleyes -- including a 12 pounder. Go to the fishing link at outdoorhub.com to see my story and photos. This week on the show we talk winter open water fishing for big blue cats on the Ohio River with Cincy-based guide Dale Broughton (see Dan's Links for contact info), who captains a boat with a heated cabin for those who choose to fish from the comfort of a boat on open water rather than the comfort of a heated shanty on the ice...Tune in!

Big Walleye Being Caught

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

We debunk a record walleye rumor about a reported 18 pound fish being caught through the ice week before last. Turned out to be a 31.5 inch, 12.2 pound fish, which is still huge, a photo of which people re-posted on line and kept "increasing" it's size.... I talked to Capt Mike Patterson, who guided the angler, and he says they are catching 10 pound plus walleye regularly off Catawba right now. Call Mike at 419-308-6925 to book a shanty. South Bass Island fish -- walleye and perch -- are active as well (see my previous blog for Kostura's ferry service and ice guide Bud Gehring's contact info). -- Dan

Thanks and Big Ice-Caught Walleye Reported

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

I wanted to thank the half dozen or so listeners who stopped by the Bass Tub at the Cincy Sport Show last weekend to say hello before and after my Kids Fishing 411 clinics. I had one family stop by to re-introduce heir 19 year old daughter, who had been the child I had selected from the audience to go up on the tank with me to catch a fish to end the kids show -- a decade ago! Made me feel a bit ancient -- but good. Ice Fishing Guide Bud Gehring is hosting anglers and Joe Kostura is ferrying fishermen to and from South Bass Island from Catawba on Lake Erie as we speak. Tune in this weekend for an ice fishing update -- and news of a 37 inch walleye reported caught through the ice off Green Island earlier this week. Go to Bud's contact info on Dan's Links here on the site to reserve a shanty and call Joe Kostura to reserve a ride over via airboat at (419) 285-3106. -- Dan
