Da' Rut

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

ODNR whitetail biologist Dr. Mike Tonkovich will join me in the studio next week to talk about the rut and related deer hunting subjects just in time for the peak of deer activity here in Ohio. Meanwhile, I'm chasing whitetails four days a week and can say that the rut is on in my locales. 'Hope same is true for you and that you get a chance to take advantage of it. Good luck!--Dan

Bellyboating for Buckeye State Bass

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

I just finished an entertaining interview with Cornelius "Corn" Harris, a fishing guide with Hocking Hills Adventure Trek (hockinghillsadventuretrek.com)who specializes in taking anglers bass fishing via bellyboat on the remote ponds spread across the AEP ReCreation Lands (the old "Ohio Power Lands") in southeastern Ohio. It sounds like quite an angling adventure -- and for big Ohio bass to boot! It will air on the October 18 show, along with some excellent deer hunting tips from WTU's Brandon Showen, so tune in! -- Dan

Youth Waterfowl Clinic a Blast

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

WFIN Station Manager Mike Holman and his son Mark joined my son Ethan and me Sunday at Ottawa NWR for the second annual Youth Waterfowl clinic and hunt. I learned a new way to clean ducks for the grill and got some calling tips; the boys now know how to ID ducks and set decoys, among other skills shared at the event. After the clinic sessions and a sack lunch they provided, we got to hunt the refuge from 4:30 until sunset and had ducks and geese and trumpeter swans in the air pretty much the entire time. The boys had shots at teal, woodies and mallards that came in to inspect our decoy spread, but none connected. It was a fun day and an event I recommend if they do it again next year. Watch for announcements in July to apply for a slot; I'll share news of it on the radio show. -- Dan

Ladies Day Out to Fish!

Posted by: Dan in Untagged  on

I'll be at the Columbus Cabela's at noon Saturday, Oct 4, leading a basic fishing program as part of the Ladies Day Out event at the store form 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. I know, it's directly on top of the noon kickoff of the OSU v. Maryland football game, but if I can tape it so can you. In fact, I find myself taping most of the Buckeyes and Browns games anymore, to watch later and leave me time in the field hunting birds or deer or fishing for steelhead. Which is what I hope to do Tuesday to gather first-hand info for next weekend's radio show on steelhead fishing. Meanwhile, on Sunday I'll be sharing a blind with former BS producer Mike Holman, now station manger at Findlay's WFIN. Mike and I accompany our sons at the Youth Waterfowl Hunting program Sunday at Magee Marsh. I'll let you know how we do -- we're experiencing good weather for a duck at present, so it may be a good one! -- Dan
