If you caught this week's show you realized it was a "Best of Buckeye Sportsman" edition, a special program put together by producer Dean Heid, featuring some prime audio from recent shows, to air when I am out of town and unavailable to come in and do a show in person. The reason I wasn't in Ohio in time to do the show was because I was out in Monterey, California, on assignment for WaveLength (wavelengthmagazine.com) to do a feature on the saltwater kayak fishing found off Cannery Row and other John Steinbeck haunts. What with the time zone changes, flights and broadcast schedules, I didn't time my return accurately enough to make it back to do the show at our regular time. Hopefully you enjoyed what Dean compiled, especially the excerpts from Ted Nugent's recent appearance on "Buckeye Sportsman" and the piece on "Fishing the Plops" for fall catfish.
Meanwhile, I caught some rockfish, got in the middle of a bunch of sea otters, cruised by a sleeping harbor seal close enough to nudge with a paddle (I didn't) and got TOO close to some over-sized sea lions, who let me know I had invaded their personal zones by barking and threatening to swamp my kayak.
To be honest, as fun as it sounds, I couldn't wait to get home. This is a great time to be in Ohio: the fish are putting on their annual autumn feedbag and most popular hunting seasons are open -- or about to. Tune this week for the first show of November when we get Ohio waterfowl and upland hunting forecasts from the experts. Good luck in the field and on the water! -- Dan
